Key has launched its KEY 4M Solar Equipment Insurance + Home Eco Bundle, offering Jamaicans coverage for home, solar and EV needs in one solution as households prepare for the hurricane season.

As more Jamaicans turn to solar energy to manage electricity costs and build greater resilience, Key Insurance Company Limited (Key) has launched a new solar protection bundle to help homeowners safeguard their renewable energy investments during the hurricane season.

The product, the KEY 4M Solar Equipment Insurance + Home Eco Bundle, is designed to offer customers protection for solar equipment alongside home-related coverage, helping to reduce the risk of being left financially exposed after a major weather event.

A recent Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) public notice validated net-billing energy rates for customers and self-generators who supply electricity to the national grid from small renewable energy facilities of up to 100 kilowatts. The validated rates for September to December 2025 ranged from J$22.090 per kWh to J$29.233 per kWh, underscoring that solar equipment is not only a resilience tool, but also a valuable household or business asset that may support long-term energy savings and income generation.

Andrew Dunkley, Assistant General Manager at Key, said solar panels, batteries, inverters and related energy systems are no longer luxury items for households and companies.

“These systems now carry significant financial value for a home or business. That is why protection must be part of the conversation from the start,” Dunkley said.

He noted that the bundle was designed to support Jamaicans who are taking proactive steps to get ready for the hurricane season while also adopting more sustainable energy solutions.

Protecting Income Generating Assets

“Globally, consumers are choosing these solutions as they become part of how families and companies manage energy costs, protect themselves from outages and plan for the future,” Dunkley said. “With this bundle, we want customers to think about protecting their solar investment with the same seriousness that they apply to protecting their homes.”

While solar energy systems can help reduce electricity costs and provide backup power during outages, they may also be vulnerable to severe weather, including high winds, flying debris, heavy rainfall, and storm-related damage.

The company noted that the product is timely as hurricane readiness has expanded beyond shutters, generators, and emergency supplies. For households and businesses with solar systems, Hurricane readiness must also include reviewing their insurance coverage, confirming policy limits, and understanding what documentation may be required if damage occurs.

Dunkley is encouraging homeowners and businesses with solar equipment to review their coverage early and ensure that their renewable energy investments are properly protected.
